Waterproof materials

Today we tested materials to see if they were waterproof.

We split into 2 groups. Some began the afternoon relaxing with their feet in a foot spa and playing with rain makers before going outside to test the materials.

Outside, we put on our waterproof clothes to make sure we stayed dry. We used a watering can to pour water over the different materials. Before we did this, we predicted which were going to be waterproof and which weren't. We were very good at guessing correctly!

Items we tested included a rubber glove, paper, a sock and a plastic bag.

Our favourite item to test was the umbrella. It was great fun standing underneath it while Laura sprayed it with the hose.

Splish, Splash, Splosh!

This week we began to look at our new topic, 'Splish, Splash, Splosh', which is all about water and the weather.

We found out about where we find water and what we use water for.

We used the smartboard to play a game to dress 'Lecky' in the appropriate clothes for the weather.

We used washing up liquid to blow bubbles in water and used food colouring to change the colour when playing with it.

On Tuesday afternoon we went out on a 'water walk' around town. We took turns at using the camera to take pictures of places where we saw water and of places that use water.

When we stopped to take a picture of the fire station, we were lucky enough to have the doors opened for us so we could sit on the front of the fire engine! What a lovely picture of us all!

Winter Week

This week, 1A have been learning all about Winter.

On Tuesday afternoon we went on a Winter walk to Muddisdale. It was a lovely sunny day, perfect for going out and about.

We had a list of things to look out for on our walk and ticked them off as we saw them.

Everyone was very good at spotting the different signs of Winter.

We collected some twigs to take back to school. We made pictures from these the next day.

We made a Winter display on the wall outside of our classroom to display the work we have been doing this week.

We used different textured print mitts to make a snow effect on the display paper.

Using chalk, we made lovely Winter pictures.

On Wednesday we made bird cake to help feed the birds in the cold weather.

We left them to set then hung them on some trees around the school. We are looking forward to watching the birds outside our classroom feeding on them.

Messy Play

On Monday 7th February we had a messy play afternoon. There were lots of mixtures of different textures we had to explore.

Gloop is always a favourite! It is made by mixing cornflour and water together. When your hands first go into the mixture it feels solid but it turns to liquid when it is picked up. It is very strange!

We got sticky mixing flour with syrup and treacle. Not everyone was keen on the smell of the treacle!

We even made our own messy mixture!

Wednesday 2nd February

As it was Chinese New Year this week, we made some Chinese Mooncakes.

First we mixed up all the ingredients using the electric mixer.

They had to be rolled into balls then we used our thumbs to make a small hole in the middle.

We filled the holes with jam before putting them in the oven.

They were yummy!!
